In Pembroke, Ontario, new parking spots outside the Pembroke OPP station at 77 International Dr. now feature a handshake symbol, designating them as community safety zones for online transactions. These spots provide a secure location for buyers and sellers to meet and exchange goods purchased online. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP launched Project Safe Trade to create these “community safety zones” at OPP detachment parking lots, aiming to move online transactions from private areas to public spaces. The secure trading locations are open 24/7 without the need for appointments.

With the holiday season approaching, the timing for Project Safe Trade is ideal, noted Steph Neufeld, commander of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment. This initiative is intended to reduce offences related to online marketplace transactions and minimize victimization and harm within communities.Const. Mike Mahon emphasized that these zones help prevent potential fraud. Police will not mediate transactions but will respond if a situation turns criminal. To stay safe during transactions, meet in busy public areas, bring a companion, conduct transactions during daylight, and keep all communication records.
